As of this writing it has been seven years since r&b/soul/funk diva Chaka Khan released her most recent album, the Grammy Award winning (Best R&B Album 2008) “Funk This”.
In only her second album of new pop material in fifteen years Khan covered such hallowed ground originally shaped by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and The Doobie Brothers.
Her cover of the 30 year old Prince song “Sign ‘O’ The Times” is a standout.
Taken from Prince’s ninth studio album, the 1987 album of the same name, “Sign ‘O’ The Times” was then and remains to this day through 54 year old Khan’s chilling new rendering a blaring funk indictment of the age in which we live. Sign of the times indeed.
