25 Questions With Jay of Chlorine Beach

Question 1: CDs, Vinyl or Download?

Definitely vinyls, no doubt. Although, I do like the instant access people have to new music through downloading.

Question 2: First album you ever bought (regardless of format)

The first album I ever received was an Imagine Dragons CD. I got it from a Barnes And Noble when I was super young.

Question 3: Most recent album you bought?

While on a trip like 2 weeks back, I picked up a copy of The Doors self titled, and Arctic Monkeys’ “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.”

Question 4: How did it come about that you first started playing music?

I’ve had a love for music for as long as I can remember. I picked up the guitar pretty much as soon as I could comprehend it. (Around 10). Writing lyrics came later, but I’ve always been fairly musically inclined. It was like a calling.

Question 5: First song you ever played? Was it a cover song or your own?

The first song I ever learned how to play was “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol. My dad taught it to me shortly after I started learning guitar. The first song I ever recorded was a terrible cover of “21 Guns” by Green Day that I made in Audacity when I was like 11.

Question 6: Do you regularly perform cover songs in your shows and if you do what is your favourite to play?

I don’t usually perform covers; I try to fill the setlist with original songs, however, at my last show I did perform a cover of, “My Generation” by The Who. That was pretty fun.

Question 7: Do you play all the instruments on your recordings? If you do not who are you collaborating with and what do they play?

I do play all the instruments on my songs. Except for the drums; I write them, but a computer plays them. I’ve thought about getting session players to record some songs with me, but I just don’t think I’d like it.

Question 8: What is your favourite era of music and why?

This is a tough question because there were so many good eras of music. The best, in my opinion, was probably around the 60’s-70’s. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, and The Velvet Underground all active at the same time. I would lose my mind. That is probably the most formative era for rock music as well.

Question 9: When you’re writing songs, is it the music or lyrics first?

It varies depending on the song. Sometimes, I’ll write a catchy chorus and write an instrumental around that. Sometimes, I’ll finish the whole instrumental section first and then begin the lyrics. It just depends on what I have written first, the chorus, the verses, or the riff.

Question 10: How did you learn to write songs?

I’ve always been into poetry and they’re quite similar. It just came kinda naturally.

Question 11: Bowie or Beatles?

The Beatles, no questions asked.

Question 12: What are your thoughts regarding music streaming?

I think it has its pros and cons. You can get instant access to good music all the time, but it also takes away from the uniqueness music had in the past. Anyone can put anything on a streaming service.

Question 13: iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon or Spotify and why?

Spotify because that’s where most of my UK listeners come from. I have a special place in my heart for them.

Question 14: Do you feel a presence on Social Media is necessary for your music to be heard?

I feel like it can definitely help as a way of marketing yourself as an artist, but I don’t see the need to keep my social media presence a priority.

Question 15: Social Media platform of choice and why?

YouTube. I’ve had the most success from YouTube, and I’ve also been making videos for about as long as I’ve done music.

Yes, I’d say a good portion of listeners who hear my music come from YouTube.

Question 17: What do you feel is the most beneficial platform for you to sell and distribute your music on: Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Official Website, iTunes or other?

I definitely feel like Spotify or Apple Music because those give me the biggest percentage of global listeners. I like having listeners in places besides America.

Question 18: What is your biggest aspiration in music? What is it that you hope to achieve?

I want my art to be a voice for people. I want to be able to inspire people with the stuff I make.

Question 19: What are your thoughts on the relevancy of Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart?

It’s all hip hop, country, or older rock albums. I think we need more variety and less saturation in the industry, and then that chart will look less boring.

Question 20: Favourite latest music discovery?

This song called, “You Wear Me Out” by Dirtbike. Has like a thousand views on YouTube, no streams, but it’s a really good lofi song. Reminds me of old Duster.

Question 21: You are an incredibly prolific artist. How many albums and EPs have you released in the past 5 years?

In the past 5 years, I have released five singles, three EPs, two albums, and uploaded 52 songs on SoundCloud (most are private). I don’t count the first album I made because I hate it.

Question 22: Which of your albums would you recommend to fans as the best introduction to your music?

Definitely Monophobia. That’s the most straightforward introduction to my music.

Question 23: Tell us about your latest release.

So my latest release was Monophobia. It’s an album I made over the course of 22 days, and it was super fun to make. The guitars on it are pretty clean compared to my new release coming very soon. It’s a little heavier on the rock and roll side of things. Inspired more by 90’s rock bands. That’s all I can say, I don’t wanna spoil anything.

Question 24: What is your dream concert to attend? Regardless if the band is still together or the artist is still living, who is it that you’d like to see live in concert the most and in what period of their career?

Probably Oasis in 1994. Coming right off the release of Definitely Maybe, sounding as tight as ever.

Question 25: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Keep track of where you’re going, but don’t forget who you were before it all began!
