This Album Matters – Secret House by Jodis

by Sean Passmore | May 1, 2024 | Album of the Week, Blog | 0 comments

Who: Jodis

What: Secret House

Where: Post-Metal America, USA

Why: In 2007, the musical talents of guitarist James Plotkin (Khanate), drummer Tim Wyskida (Khanate) and singer Aaron Turner (SUMAC, Isis) converged to form the enigmatic trio known as Jodis. Drawing from their backgrounds in heavy metal and post-metal, the collective ventured into uncharted territory with the release of their 2009 debut album, “Secret House” on Turner’s now defunct Hydra Head Records.

From the onset, it was evident that Jodis was not content with following the conventional path of darkness and heaviness that often characterizes their respective genres. Instead, “Secret House” emerged as a daring exploration of restrained sonic minimalism and tonal density, surprising both fans and critics alike.

The album’s strength lies in the meticulous fusion of Plotkin and Wyskida’s rhythmic interplay with Turner’s haunting vocal delivery. This careful balance forms the foundation of the seven tracks that make up “Secret House,” creating a cohesive musical journey that transcends traditional boundaries.

While the album may lean towards minimalistic drone, Jodis manages to defy classification by infusing their sound with unexpected lushness and melodic elements. The result is a mesmerizing experience that showcases the trio’s ability to create a nuanced sonic landscape that is both immersive and fulfilling.

In essence, “Secret House” challenges preconceived notions of what drone music can achieve, proving that complexity and diversity can exist within a minimalist framework. Jodis’ debut album stands as a testament to their artistic vision and innovative approach to crafting music that defies easy categorization.

When: 2009
