Taking the name from an episode of ’90’s TV show Northern Exposure in which a group of Alaskan citizens celebrate the first snowfall of winter by wishing one another bon hiver, a French phrase meaning “good winter”, Wisconsin native Justin Vernon continues to surprise and confound with his 2nd Bon Iver full length since the release of 2007’s debut For Emma, Forever Ago. Heavily borrowing from production tricks influenced over a period of time through his collaborations with the likes of Kanye West and Jay Z, Vernon has taken the modern notion of the indie folk singer songwriter and turned it on it’s head. Assisted by the saxophone collective lovingly referred to as Sad Sax Of Shit through indecipherable song titles and vocal manipulations more at home in the EDM infused beats of modern R&B/Hip Hop, Vernon breaths new life and a sense of mystery and wonder into a tired old genre.
